ARABIAN DEFENSE -- Turkey’s national combat aircraft went on display at the world’s largest aerospace exhibition, the 17th international Paris Airshow, for the first time in France on Monday.

The model of the TF-X war jet, which took five months to build by the Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), garnered a great deal of attention at the fair.

Turkey is the fourth country with the technology to manufacture fifth generation aircraft, following the U.S., Russia and China.

The TFX is a multi-role aircraft, designed maily for air-to-air roles while also capable of fulfilling air-to-surface roles.

Turkey's national combat aircraft is set to gradually replace the F-16 fighter jets, starting from the year 2030.

Ankara is now meeting 65 percent of the country's defense needs through its own local and national defense industry.

The airshow will continue until Sunday at Le Bourget airport.
Local residents near SpaceX’s test site in Brownsville, Texas, received a notice in the mail informing them of test flights that could occur “as soon as the week of March 18, 2019,” according to local news. Checkpoints will be set up for a “safety zone” around the launch site.

“Hopefully,” Musk replied in a tweet, when asked if it was true SpaceX was testing this week. “Always many issues integrating engine & stage. First hops will lift off, but only barely.”
Moving On To Orbital Flights

SpaceX successfully tested the Raptor engine in February. With three of them powering the spacecraft, Starship could eventually make its way all the way to the Moon or even Mars — or at least that’s the hope.

Musk also tweeted that SpaceX didn’t bother building “a new nosecone for Hopper” after the original was damaged due to high winds at the Texas test site in January.

“Don’t need it,” he wrote. “What you see being built is the orbital Starship vehicle.”
ARABIAN DEFENSE -- The UAE’s ambitious plans to send a manned mission to Mars within 100 years, unveiled last month, is prompting others around the Gulf region to think about following suit.

A recent report by the official Kuwaiti news agency Kuna suggests that a number of locals there are starting to wonder if Kuwait could follow the UAE’s lead and set up its own national space program. Citing Dr Hala Al-Jassar, assistant professor at the Physics Department at Kuwait University, it said that establishing a space program, or at least a space agency, “is not a fantasy, it is the way of the future.”

Kuwait has a limited base of experience to draw on in this arena. In 2014, Kuwait University and the Kuwait Foundation for Advancement of Science signed up to NASA’s soil moisture active passive (SMAP) initiative. In addition, the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research is working with NASA on its jet propulsion laboratory project.

Such programs may be limited, but they do at least represent a start. “When we start a space program, we will not be starting from scratch,” Dr Al-Jassar told Kuna. “We have the budget, the talents, the expertise and outstanding graduates.”

Whether the authorities will be so keen is another matter. Any space program is liable to be extremely expensive which, at a time of low oil revenues, tight budgets and high demands for other government services, is not an appealing prospect.

There have been occasional bouts of space-related dreaming in the past. In June 1985, Sultan bin Salman al-Saud, a member of the Saudi royal family, was part of the crew on a Space Shuttle Discovery flight – becoming the first Arab, first Muslim and first member of a royal family to go into outer space.

But since then Saudi Arabia, like most Gulf countries, has focused its efforts on getting satellites rather than people into space. Its activities are led by the National Satellite Technology Centre, part of the King Abdulaziz City for Science & Technology (KACST) in Riyadh. Saudi Arabia’s great regional rival Iran is involved in similar efforts, led by the Iranian Space Agency and the Iran Aerospace Research Centre.
ARABIAN DEFENSE -- The Gulf state of Qatar is becoming a player in the global search for exoplanets since launching the Qatar Exoplanet Survey (QES) in 2010.

To date, more than 3700 exoplanets have been discovered, mostly by NASA’s Kepler space telescope and K2 missions. Other projects of note, smaller in scale, include HARPS and WASP. Now, the small Arabian Gulf state of Qatar—wanting to participate in the global search—launched its own program, the Qatar Exoplanet Survey (QES) in 2010 to probe the skies for exoplanets.

Exoplanets, also known as extrasolar planets, are planets orbiting a star other than our sun. Those found within the “habitable zone” of their mother star may be able to support life. Scattered abundantly throughout the observable universe, there are many reasons why we may want to search for them. One is inherent to human psychology; a realization of our potential cosmic loneliness. Another is the search for an escape route from a future Earth whose resources may be utterly depleted or it may be the drive to understand how the universe came to be, and where we come from that fuels this hunt across the nightly skies.

The QES project was founded by Khalid Al-Subai, who returned to Qatar after gaining a doctorate in astronomy in the United Kingdom. He gathered the funds and connections to use his expertise for an exoplanet search venture at home.

But what motivates a small Gulf state with a soaring fossil-fuel-based economy to support astronomical research?

“It seems to me that the countries of the Gulf and also of all the Middle East have finally grasped the importance of investing in scientific research in a general way and in astronomy and space science in particular, given the inestimable benefits that this generates in terms of development,” says Benkhaldoun Zouhair, president of the Moroccan National Committee for Astronomy (MNCA).

Andrew Cameron, a lead scientist on the QES project and an astronomy professor at the University of St. Andrews agrees saying that “funding [by the Qatar National Research Foundation] of blue-skies science projects is always worthwhile in terms of inspiring new generations of scientists and motivating powerful new ways of extracting knowledge from very large datasets. The benefits are practical as well as philosophically inspiring.”

The QES project uses a space-probing method, known as transit, to detect new exoplanets through its remotely located telescopes in New Mexico (USA), Tenerife (Spain) and Urumqi (China). Its principle is continuous recording of light in the sky. If a planet traverses the light path, a fluctuation is seen in the detected light. Unpredicted fluctuations point to undiscovered transiting objects.

Since its launch in 2010, the QES discovered six new exoplanets this way, which were named Qatar-1b, 2b, 3b, 4b, 5b and 6b. The planets are all from the “hot Jupiter” type – gas giants, scorching and inhospitable to the most basic life forms.

More sought-after are planets within a size range similar to Earth, and conditions that may harbor liquid water. But efforts to catalogue all types of exoplanets are valuable for a basic understanding of the cosmos.

Within the next two years, NASA’s intensive exoplanet search project TESS, planned for launch in March 2018, is expected to discover most of the remaining exoplanets of the hot Jupiter type (at least 3000 more) in the range of brightness and transit depth accessible to QES. TESS has the advantage of its telescopes being in space, achieving better signal and scope than telescopes on Earth. However, Cameron is confident that smaller-scale, land-based projects like WASP and QES will fill a vital new niche.

“Once that happens,” he says, “there will be an important new role for projects like QES in continuing to monitor the transits after TESS has moved on to different survey fields. It’s important to establish precise predictions of when transits will happen for years into the future.”

With a lot more to discover, and funding being no object, Qatar’s telescopes are likely to remain pointed skyward for the next few years. The focus on astronomy in particular may be more than just a development in the transition towards a knowledge-based and sustainable economy, but also a revival of historical tradition and heritage in the Arab region.

In neighboring UAE, the development of a space program, which includes various space satellite projects and the Emirates Mars Mission, is further testament to that.
ARABIAN DEFENSE -- At a military airfield on the outskirts of the Jordanian capital, three American businessmen stood admiring the star exhibit, which looked eerily familiar: a large drone, armed with weapons under its wings, with a domed front.

“They brought the Predator here,” said one, in reference to the ubiquitous U.S. drone used in wars from Bosnia to Iraq.

“That is not a Predator,” another countered.

The drone on display was, in fact, a Chinese unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) called the Rainbow CH-4, which has quickly spread around the world. Jordan bought the drone in 2015 but displayed it publicly for the first time this year at the Special Operations Forces Exhibition and Conference, known as SOFEX, a biennial event where companies market their latest wares.
ARABIAN DEFENSE -- The Chinese Navy is testing new drones capable of synchronized operations with military aircraft.

The drones – or unmanned aerial vehicles – are tailor-made to ascend and land vertically on destroyers and even aircraft carriers.

Joint operations of manned military aircraft such as fighter jets and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are the way of the future, Shi Wen, chief engineer and designer of China’s Caihong attack drones, told Xinhua.

“We are making efforts to promote artificial intelligence for UAVs to allow manned aircraft to co-pilot UAVs,” Shi revealed.

China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp, a military-industrial complex, was commissioned by the Chinese military to develop a squadron of attack and reconnaissance drones. They will be used by PLA naval units tasked with responding to emergencies in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea.

The Global Times has suggested that the first batch of shipborne drones will roll off the production line soon, once China’s first domestically made carrier nears its maiden sea trial.

“Although the military has not released any information, research into carrier-based UAVs started long ago, and ship-based UAVs have already been used in training on destroyers and frigates,” the paper quoted a naval expert as saying.

A new “stealth” drone, codenamed Caihong-X, believed to be the epitome of Chinese drone technology, will be displayed at Airshow China 2018 in November in the southern city of Zhuhai.

Observers believe Caihong-X could be compatible with electromagnetic catapults said to have been mounted on the homemade carrier.

The virtues of carrier-borne drones are obvious: extended payload, airborne time, operational radius, plus extra maneuverability, as it should have significant acceleration speed when it’s catapulted from a carrier, far beyond that of a normal plane.
ARABIAN DEFENSE -- Satellite imagery may have identified the unnamed first export customer of China’s next-generation medium-altitude long-endurance and strike-capable Wing Loong II unnamed aerial vehicle (UAV).

According to satellite imagery taken at the remote Qusahwirah Air Base near the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) border with Oman and Saudi Arabia, three drones matching Wing Loong II dimensions were spotted in October 2017, Jane’s Defense Weekly revealed this month.

“The United Arab Emirates (UAE) air force has almost certainly acquired the AVIC Wing Loong II [UAV],” Jane’s concludes.
ARABIAN DEFENSE -- Qatar is sending new signals that the current regional blockade against it has still not compromised its independence. On Jan. 25, Qatar's ambassador to Russia, Fahad bin Mohammed al-Attiya, told Russia's Tass news agency that his country was in "advanced" talks to buy Russia's S-400 air defense system.

The comments were widely published in Qatari media and have received acclaim from many prominent Qatari Twitter users.

From a military perspective, the S-400 system is not particularly critical for Qatar. The U.S. air base at al-Udeid has long been the country's main security guarantor, and the new base that Turkey established in Qatar in the wake of the blockade, which began in June, offered an additional military boost.

The S-400, while useful for giving Qatar an advanced air defense system to address recent air space violations, is more than anything a diplomatic move.
ARABIAN DEFENSE -- The first two Eurofighter Typhoon combat jets destined for Royal Air Force of Oman (RAFO) have completed maiden flight from BAE Systems final assembly facility in Warton, Lancashire, UK.

The twin seat trainer variants ZR410 and ZR411 are part of 12 aircraft deal signed in 2012 and will be delivered in 2017.

Oman was the second of the three Middle East nations who have ordered this European multi-national fighter. Currently Saudi Arabia operates the type and Kuwait have 28 on order.

The new Typhoon fleet will replace Oman’s Sepecat Jaguar fighter-bombers retired in 2014 and complement the F-16 C/D fighter jets acquired from USA.

The fleet will be based at the newly constructed Adam airbase, located about 100 miles south west of capital Muscat.

The Eurofighter is powered by twin EJ200 jet engines rated at 90 kN each that enable it to achieve a top speed of Mach 2 and a maximum altitude of 55,000 ft.

Under its 13 external hardpoints, the Typhoon can carry a wide range of missiles, bombs and sensors to form Oman's frontline fighter fleet. The Typhoon's fighter-bomber swing role capability is evident from its ability to carry up to 6 bombs whilst also carrying six missiles, a cannon and a targeting pod.

Only 15% of the aircraft’s surface is metal, delivering stealth operation and protection from radar-based systems.
ARABIAN DEFENSE -- On November 7, 2016, Saudi Arabia’s ruling monarch King Salman bin Abdulaziz met with Meng Jianzhu, a special envoy of Chinese President Xi Jinping, in Riyadh. After a series of talk between Chinese officials and senior members of the Saudi royal family, the Saudi government unveiled a five-year plan for Saudi Arabia-China security cooperation during Meng’s visit.

This plan would include counterterrorism cooperation and joint military drills, cementing Saudi Arabia’s status as a vital Chinese ally in the Middle East.

Even though China has emerged as Saudi Arabia’s leading economic partner in recent years, the transition toward a full-fledged defensive partnership is a new, largely unforeseen development.

In contrast to the multibillion dollar annual arms contracts binding Saudi Arabia to the United States, China only sold $700 million in arms to Riyadh from 2008-2011. Low levels of Riyadh-Beijing security cooperation were attributed to China’s long-standing friendship with Iran, disagreements over Bashar al-Assad’s future in Syria and long-standing Chinese disdain for Saudi Arabia’s sponsorship of Islamist networks.
ARABIAN DEFENSE -- North Korea wants to plant its flag on the moon sometime in the next 10 years, despite international sanctions.

The intention was revealed in an Associated Press news agency interview with Hyon Kwang-iI, a senior official at North Korea's National Aerospace Development Administration, Thursday.

"We will not be daunted by the U.S. and its allies trying to block our space development program," Hyon said. "We will conquer space and plant the flag on the moon."
Ramzan Kadyrov has accused the US authorities of instigating the civil war in Afghanistan and other Muslim countries, and called on senior politicians in these states to set aside their differences and unite in the face of what he sees as a common enemy.
“During the 37 years of the war in Afghanistan peace has not become closer, not even by a single step. The United States used the excuse of fighting their own Bin Laden to unleash a decades-long civil war there. ARABIAN DEFENSE -- The Pakistan Repatriation Council (PRC) recently organized in Jeddah a symposium titled “Nuclear technology: Our need and obligation” to mark the 18th anniversary of Pakistan’s detonation of a nuclear bomb. Pakistan carried out the nuclear tests in May, 1998, defying the intense pressure of Western powers to prevent it. The reaction of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to this pressure was that the acquisition of nuclear technology was a matter of life and death as far as Pakistan and its national security were concerned. With these tests, Pakistan became a member of the club of nuclear powers. It was the first Muslim nation to possess nuclear weapons.

It was the late president Mohammed Ayub Khan who took the initiative for Pakistan’s nuclear program in the 1960s when he established a nuclear reactor and power plant with the help of Canada in Karachi in 1963. This reactor started operation in the early 1970s. When India conducted its first nuclear tests in 1974, the then Pakistani prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto declared that Pakistan would build a nuclear bomb. “If India built the bomb, we will eat grass, even go hungry, but we will get one of our own,” he said.

Bhutto courageously initiated Pakistan’s strategic defense institute by bringing home renowned nuclear scientist Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, who is the father of Pakistan’s nuclear bomb. He is also known as the father of the Islamic nuclear bomb in that Pakistan is the only Islamic nation possessing nuclear weapons.

Several prominent figures of the Pakistani community in Jeddah addressed the symposium. All of them expressed their immense pride in Pakistan’s great achievements in the field of nuclear technology. They urged the Pakistani government to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, such as the generation of electricity and to support medical and agricultural products to benefit not only the people of Pakistan but of the entire Muslim world.

The speakers also drew attention to the misery of the stranded Pakistanis who have been languishing in squalid camps in Bangladesh for 45 years. They pointed out that Bangladeshis treat these hapless people in a humiliating manner because they stood by the Pakistan army in safeguarding the unity of the nation during the civil war. The speakers voiced concern over the attitude of successive Pakistani governments in ignoring the cause of the stranded Pakistanis and abandoning them to a doomed fate.

When my turn to speak at the symposium came, I first congratulated the PRC and its officials for organizing the event to mark the anniversary of Youm-e-Takbeer (The Day of Greatness) which, of course, deserves to be celebrated. I expressed my hope that Pakistan would always remain a strong and powerful nation. I also said that I hoped that Pakistan would never use its nuclear weapon and that it would always remain a deterrent to maintain the balance of power in the subcontinent. I emphasized the fact that the nuclear explosion of 1998 was an important achievement for the defense of Pakistan as a strong Pakistan is needed for the Ummah. I said: “If Japan had its own nuclear weapon, then the US would not have dared to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki.”

I also expressed happiness over the initiative of the Pakistani government to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, such as the production of electricity and for medical and agricultural purposes, in addition to other objectives that are instrumental in serving humanity and spurring its progress.

I said: “The great nuclear state should not have forgotten its quarter of a million patriotic citizens languishing in Bangladesh for over four decades. I was very happy when Nawaz Sharif became prime minister for the third time, but, unfortunately, he has not taken any steps for the promised repatriation of those Pakistanis. I pray and hope that Sharif has successful heart surgery in Britain and returns to fulfill his commitment to repatriate and rehabilitate the stranded Pakistanis, a process which he started during his previous tenures.”

In the concluding speech, Syed Ehsanul Haque, convener of the PRC, thanked all the speakers, guests and attendees of the symposium. He appealed to Sharif to establish a nuclear research university, headed by Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, to explore the use of electricity production and to enhance the use of nuclear energy for agriculture and medical purposes so as to benefit not only Pakistanis but also to earn precious foreign exchange.

Haque also urged Sharif to reactivate the Rabita Trust, which was founded to start the process of the repatriation and rehabilitation of the stranded Pakistanis. He said: “To overcome the paucity of funds, we sought the implementation of the PRC proposal of the ‘settlement of stranded Pakistanis on a self financing basis.’ The Pakistani High Commissioner at Dhaka should be assigned to take care of the food, health, life and security of a quarter of a million Pakistanis stranded in Bangladesh”. He called on the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to include at the top of its agenda the issue of the settlement of the stranded Pakistanis.

Haque said the Pakistani government should use organizations, such as the
United Nations and the OIC, and superpowers like the US to mount pressure on India to implement the UN resolution on holding a plebiscite in Kashmir so as to enable the people of Kashmir to enjoy the self-determination of their future.
ARABIAN DEFENSE -- Egypt's cabinet approved on Thursday a deal with Saudi Arabia regarding peaceful cooperation on nuclear power, according to a cabinet press release.

The deal was initially signed on 8 April during a visit by Saudi's King Salman Abdel Aziz to Cairo.

The agreement aims to establish cooperation in peaceful uses of nuclear power and on nuclear security, according to the release.

Egypt's government is moving ahead with plans to build the country's first nuclear power plant, expected to be completed in 2022 and operational by 2024.

The plant, located in Dabaa in the coastal governorate of Marsa Matrouh, will eventually generate a total of 4,800 megawatts through four reactors.

Last week, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi approved a $25 billion loan from Russia to fund the building and operation of the plant.

Egypt and Saudi Arabia are already working on connecting their power grids through a $1.6 billion deal, approved by Egypt's cabinet in January 2015, where they would share 3,000 megawatts of electricity by 2017.

During King Salman's visit, Egypt and Saudi Arabia also signed final loan agreements worth over $24 billion.
ARABIAN DEFENSE -- The first Boeing AH-6i light attack/reconnaissance helicopter destined to serve the Saudi Arabia National Guard (SANG) was in the final stage of assembly this week at the manufacturer’s Mesa, Ariz. facility. Company officials expect to deliver the helicopter in July.

During a press trip Boeing hosted at its Mesa production facility, reporters viewed the first SANG AH-6i helicopter—numbered 61001—going through the final week of the build process, prior to entering flight testing. Seven of 24 AH-6is ordered under a 2014 foreign military sale (FMS) were cycling through assembly. Fuselages for the first AH-6is manufactured for Saudi Arabia are being provided by MD Helicopters, with sub-assembly taking place in Monterrey, Mexico.

AH-6is can be fitted with a combination of Hellfire missile and rocket launchers, miniguns and machine guns. The aircraft's integrated, digital cockpit and mission computer were derived from the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter.

The Defense Contract Management Agency will perform acceptance flight testing of the helicopters before turning them over to the Saudi government. It is expected that several Saudi pilots will train in Mesa, as well as pilots who will serve as instructors in Saudi Arabia.

The armed, single-engine helicopters were contained in a huge weapons deal the U.S. and Saudi Arabian governments negotiated in 2010 that included Boeing AH-64E Apache, Sikorsky UH-60M Blackhawk and MD Helicopters MD-530F helicopters. The Pentagon's Defense Security Cooperation Agency specified 36 AH-6is when it notified Congress of the pending sale on October 20 that year. In August 2014, the U.S. Army awarded Boeing a $234 million FMS contract to supply 24 AH-6is to the SANG, the inaugural customer of the light attack helicopter variant.

Separately, Boeing was awarded a $667 million FMS contract to supply 24 AH-64E Apaches to Qatar, the Department of Defense announced on June 7. Work on the contract is expected to be completed by May 2020.
